European sales 2017 first half: Passenger Van segment

Passenger-van-segment-European-sales-2017-Volkswagen_T6-Fiat_Ducato-Mercedes_Benz_V_ClassSales of large passenger vans in Europe continue their double digit growth thanks to ongoing success of existing models and a rejuvenation of a number of players. A 36% growth in Q2 brings the first half 2017 figure to 137.832 sales, up 34% on the year before. The three top sellers all grow slower than the segment and lose share but remain dominant with a combined 54,9% share (down from 68,3%). The Volkswagen Transporter T6 and its luxury derivative Multivan add just 5% to their sales of last year and lose 7,2 percentage point of market share, but still sell more than 50% more than their closest rival. Even when combining the Mercedes-Benz Vito Tourer with its luxury derivative V-Class, Volkswagen maintains a comfortable lead. And while VW may lose share, its volume is still growing despite the increased competition from the all-new PSA-Toyota vans. The Fiat Ducato reclaims the 2nd spot in Q2 as it is boosted by sales of camper vans in spring and beginning of summer, a segment in which the Ducato is ultra dominant.

Peugeot_Traveller-Citroen_SpacetourerRenault has expanded its family of the Trafic to 4 members with the addition of the Nissan NV300 to the Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro and also still very fresh Fiat Talento. Combined sales of the four would place them in 4th place behind the T6, Vito/V-Class and Ducato. They’d still sell almost twice as many as the PSA-Toyota triplets Peugeot Traveller, Citroën Spacetourer and Toyota Proace Verso. The latter are doing much better than their predecessors ever did, thanks to greatly improved design, comfort and quality. They’ve finally come to realize that even in this segment buyers appreciate a more car-like experience as opposed to the more utilitarian look and feel of the previous generation. Despite all this new competition, the Ford Tourneo Custom is surprisingly the fastest growing model in the segment, more than tripling its sales of last year. The Hyundai H1 also gets a nice boost in volume for no apparent reason, as the model has been on sale virtually unchanged since 2007.

Small Passenger Van segment

Passenger-van-segment-European-sales-2016_Q3-Volkswagen_Caddy_Life-Citroen_Berlingo_Multispace-Dacia_DokkerSales of small car-based vans (or van-based cars, however you choose to look at it) are up 9% in the first half of 2017, and here too VW stays the commanding leader of the segment. The Volkswagen Caddy grows as fast as the segment average, but consolidates its leadership as the #2 Citroën Berlingo is down 4%. The Berlingo and its twin Peugeot Partner (called Ranch in the UK) are already in their 9th year and are due to be replaced next year, but still top the segment with a combined 26,6% share. The Dacia Dokker is closing in quickly with sales up 31% and just 1.500 units behind the Berlingo. In fifth place, the Renault Kangoo is closing in on the Partner thanks to a 26% gain in the second quarter, giving it an 18% improvement for the first half. Its clone Mercedes-Benz Citan shows a similar gain of 18% but that’s because of a great first quarter, as it’s up just 2% in Q2. The Ford Tourneo Courier holds on to its top spot in the smallest subsegment thanks to a gain of 12% in the first half, but the Fiat Qubo shows an impressive 36% gain thanks to its recent facelift, but like most Fiats the Qubo is heavily dependent on its home market Italy, which takes 84% of its European sales (it’s also very popular in Turkey but those figures are not included in our stats). The Qubo’s clones from Citroën and Peugeot don’t share its success as they’ve sold just 754 units combined in 6 months.
