In 2021 the passenger van segment in Europe is down 20% to just over 295,000 sales, in an overall market down 2%%. Small passenger vans account for 47.9% of these with sales down 31% and midsized passenger vans for the remaining 52.1% as this subsegment is only down 5% in 2021.

The Volkswagen Transporter T6 and its luxury derivative Multivan stay ahead of the midsized passenger van segment with sales down 3%, improving their share of the class to 30.1%. A new generation Multivan has been launched in Q4 which has become a stand alone model from the Transporter. No longer based on a commercial van, this new Multivan is supposed to also replace the Sharan large MPV. The combination of the Mercedes-Benz V-Class and Vito Tourer are down 11%, losing 1.8 percentage points of share to 24.1%. This includes the EQV electric version. The Stellantis-Toyota quadruplets also became available in EV versions and hold on to third place with sales almost stable for a share of 21.9%. The Toyota Proace Verso is the best seller of the four, ahead of the Opel/Vauxhall Zafira Life, the Citroën Spacetourer/Jumpy and the Peugeot Traveller/Expert. A Fiat version named Ulysse will replace the Renault-based Talento. The current Talento and its original Renault Trafic and the third clone Nissan NV300 are down 28% to 8% share as they lost the Opel Vivaro version. As a result, the Ford Tourneo Custom outsold the Trafic and co. and is in 2nd place when comparing individual nameplates, with 15.4% share, thanks to sales up 12%. The Hyundai H1 was replaced by the futuristic looking Staria this year. We also welcome the SAIC Maxus Euniq, an all-electric passenger van, for now only sold in the Scandinavian markets.

Small Passenger Van segment

Sales of small passenger vans are down 31% even though the entire top-5 is still pretty fresh at less than 4 years old. The Volkswagen Caddy Life stays on top and gains share of the class to 23.2% while its closest rival Citroën Berlingo Multispace is down just 15%. The latter’s sibling Peugeot Rifter loses 40% of its sales from 2020. When combining all four nameplates of the PSA-Toyota vans, they absolutely dominate the class with a 57.6% share and sales down 18%. That leaves the Caddy in a distant second place, still outselling all other nameplates. Among the leading quadruplets, the Opel/Vauxhall Combo Tour stays ahead of the Toyota Proace City Verso, the latest addition to the foursome. A Fiat version is planned as well to replace the aging Doblo which is now one of the slowest sellers in the class. The Renault Kangoo and its clones Mercedes-Benz Citan and Nissan NV250 have been renewed at the end of 2021, with the latter also being renamed Nissan Townace. Their combined sales are down 28% this year. The Dacia Dokker is being renamed Renault Express and loses 77% of its sales in its final full year. It still manages to outsell the Ford Tourneo Connect, down 31%.
