European sales 2022 – Q1-Q3 Large Passenger Vans

We’ve already discussed the rankings of the small and midsized passenger vans in the midsized MPV and large MPV segments. The small passenger van segment in Europe is down 30% in the first three quarters of 2022, trailing the overall market, down 11%. This is mostly due to Stellantis ending production of the petrol and diesel versions of its passenger vans to make them EV-only. Midsized passenger vans are down 8% and large passenger vans, mostly sold as camper vans, are down 6%. As a whole, the passenger van segment is down 16%, trailing the overall market and losing share from 3.1% to 3%.

Large passenger vans are mostly sold as camper vans and by taxi companies as passenger vans. The Fiat Ducato has been ultra dominant thanks to good relations with coachbuilders for camper vans. However, those coachbuilders are becoming more and more wary of Fiat’s dominance and are looking to spread their supply chain risks, from which Citroën and Ford are benefitting. The Ducato’s deliveries are down 27% so far this year and it loses 12.5 percentage points of share to drop to 41.9%. Its sibling Citroën Jumper makes up for some of the losses at +10% to grow its share to 23% share. Best performer this year is the Ford Transit (Tourneo) at +84% into third place at 15% share. Sales of the Transit amost double in the third quarter. As a result, it moves ahead of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter which is up 1%. The Volkswagen Crafter is up 11%, distancing the Peugeot Boxer which is up 15% after an 87% jump in Q3. As a result, the Boxerd passes the Renault Master, down 11%. The Master’s clone Nissan Interstar remains a niche player and so does the Opel Movano which used to make them triplets. The latter has moved from the Renault partnership to the Stellantis stable, even though this means it has actually moved onto an older platform than it was before. Just one passenger version was sold in Q3.
