European sales 2019-Q3 Premium Midsized and Compact SUV segments

Highlights:

  • Segment down 2% YTD, stable at 3,3% share of the European new car market.
  • Mercedes-Benz GLC holds on to the top spot of the segment, although this is including sales of the GLC Coupe
  • BMW is now the best selling brand in the segment, with 78.500 combined sales of the X3 and X4. BMW is also the big winner, gaining 5,9 percentage points of share
  • The Germans are much less dominant in SUVs than in sedans, with just 55,7% share of the segment , including Porsche. Jaguar-Land Rover holds 16,4%, Volvo holds 14,2%, and even DS is more than just a niche player at 5,3%, outselling the Alfa Romeo Stelvio
  • The Audi Q5 is unable to fight for the segment lead, stuck in 4thplace, but selling more than double of its nearest rival
  • The Range Rover Velar is already losing steam at -18% YTD, with the Porsche Macan breathing down its neck
  • The Jaguar F-Pace loses 21% so far this year and is out of the top-10 but remains ahead of the Lexus NX
  • In the EV ranking, the Jaguar I-Pace is joined by the Mercedes-Benz EQC in September

Premium Compact Crossover segment

Highlights:

  • car market.
  • BMW X1 still the best seller of the segment, despite a 5% drop in sales, but Audi is the best selling brand with its two models in 2ndand 3rd In Q3, the X1 outsold the Q3 by just one single unit.
  • Year-to-date, Audi Q3 is back ahead of the smaller Q2 with a 31% gain thanks to the new generation, as the latter is down 3% and was in 5thplace in the third quarter
  • Volvo XC40 is set to finish the year on the podium if it maintains its current momentum
  • Mercedes-Benz GLA is due for a redesign but still going strong with a 10% gain YTD and outselling the Audi Q2 in the third quarter.
  • Mini Countryman improves in Q3 but still down 2% in the first three quarters of the year
  • Range Rover Evoque leapfrogs the BMW X2 to claim 7thplace YTD thanks to the new generation
  • Jaguar E-Pace has already peaked and doesn’t seem able to compete with the German and Swedish competition
  • Lexus UX was outsold in Q3 by the DS3 Crossback, both are extravagantly styled outsiders fighting for the crumbs of this segment, and both will become available as EVs next year, which may help them gain some additional volume
  • We welcome the Mercedes-Benz GLB this quarter, the segment’s first 7-seater.
