The midsized crossover and SUV segment is one of the best performing classes in Europe in the first three quarters of 2022, with deliveries up 6% in an overall market down 11%. As a result, their share of the European car market jumps 1.8 percentage points to 11.1%, the first time this segment reaches double digit share. Luxury models are steadily taking control of this class as well, beating the class at +17%, and they now hold almost half (49.9%) of sales. In the third quarter, the midsized crossover class is up 12% in an overall market down 2%.

After taking the top spot in 2021, the Ford Kuga stays on top so far this year, and at +7% it is keeping its share stable, but its nearest rival Tesla Model Y outsold it by 8,400 deliveries in Q3, meaning the Kuga has only a 6,900 units advantage left going into the final quarter. The Model Y knows down the Toyota RAV4 into third place now that production in Tesla’s Berlin Gigafactory has come online. The RAV4 is down 20% so far this year but is comfortably ahead of the Skoda Kodiaq, up 4%. If we combine sales of the BMW X3 with those of its EV version iX3 it would be in fourth place. The Volvo XC60 and Mercedes-Benz GLC follow. The Peugeot 5008 is down 37% at #10, the Seat Tarraco is down 49% at #28 and the Land Rover Discovery Sport is down 38% at #32.

EVs improve their share of the class to 34%, from 16.1% last year. Behind the Model Y, the Volkswagen ID.4 is up 9% at #8 ahead of its sibling Skoda Enyaq, up 32% and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 at #11. The latter’s sibling Kia EV6 is down to #15, while the Ford Mustang Mach-E is up to #17 just ahead of the Audi Q4. The BMW iX3 is up to #22, ahead of the Mercedes-Benz EQB and EQC at #26 and #27. In 29th place, the Audi Q4 Sportback is under pressure from the Volkswagen ID.5 at #31, while the MG Marvel R is up to #37, just behind the Jaguar I-Pace. That makes it the best seller among Chinese EVs, with the Aiways U5 at #44 and the Maxus Euniq 6 at #48.

We welcome the Nissan Ariya at #42, the Toyota bZ4X at #45 and the Subaru Solterra at #52. Among non-EV newcomers, Mazda CX-60 is up to #38 and the Maserati Grecale is up to #43.
