Midsized crossovers and SUVs are one of the best performing classes in Europe in the first half of 2022, with deliveries up 16% in an overall market down 13%. As a result, their share of the European car market jumps 2.6 percentage points to 10.8%, the first time this segment reaches double digit share. Luxury models are steadily taking control of this class as well, beating the class at +16%, and they now hold almost half (49.5%) of sales. In the second quarter, the midsized crossover class is stable in an overall market down 24%.

After taking the top spot in 2021, the Ford Kuga stays on top so far this year, but at -4% it is losing share but its nearest rival Toyota RAV4 is down ever more at -17%. In Q2, the Kuga was up 1% while the RAV4 lost 26% of its sales. The Tesla Model Y started 2022 in second place but has fallen to third after the second quarter, being outsold as well by the Skoda Kodiaq and BMW X3 which was the #3 seller. When adding the EV version iX3, the BMW was even in the #2 spot for the second quarter. Biggest losers in the top-10 are the Peugeot 5008 at #10 (-35%) and the Volvo XC60 at #5 (-21%). The Mercedes-Benz GLC is back into the positive at +4% year-to-date, after a 20% gain in the second quarter, but its rival BMW X3 is closing in fast, outselling the GLC by 5,000 units in Q2. In contrast, the Volkswagen ID.4 is into the red at -4% year-to-date after a 33% loss in the second quarter. It’s now less than 1,000 deliveries ahead of its platform sibling Skoda Enyaq which outsold the ID.4 by 1,000 units in Q2. Both VW Group EVs have jumped past the Peugeot 5008 and are distancing their South-Korean rivals Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, as well as the Audi Q5. The third VW Group platform sibling Audi Q4 e-Tron would be in 11th place when combining it with sales of the Q4 Sportback e-Tron.

Deliveries of the Mercedes-Benz GLB are down 40% so far this year, but when combining it with its EV version EQB, total deliveries are down 10.1%. The Mazda CX-5 lost almost half of its sales in Q2, and it’s down by 24% year-to-date. Having been launched in Q2 of 2021, the Ford Mustang Mach-e was down by 2% a year later. The Porsche Macan shows a strong rebound at +33%, in contrast to the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, showing declines of 29% and 23% respectively. The Tiguan’s sibling Seat Tarraco did even worse at -56% year-t0-date (and -73% in Q2). Other models struggling are the Land Rover Discovery Sport at -49% (although it showed a slight recovery at -19% in Q2), as well as its siblings Range Rover Velar at -23% and the Jaguar F-Pace at -43%.

Among newcomers, the MG Marvel R in 36th place is being caught by the Volkswagen ID.5. We welcome the Toyota bZ4X at #41, just ahead of the Aiways U5, as well as the Toyota’s clone Subaru Solterra at #49, just behind the Skoda Enyaq Coupe. We also welcome the Maserati Grecale at #50 and the Mazda CX-60 at #51, just ahead of the Nissan Ariya.
