European sales 2017-Q1 large SUV segment

Large_SUV-segment-European-sales-2017_Q1-Ford_Edge-Hyundai_Santa_Fe-Kia_SorentoAt just 16.400 sales in Q1 of 2017, the large SUV segment is one of the smallest in Europe, in contrast to the US where it’s almost the largest segment as Americans buy almost 30 times as many of these cars than Europeans do. And every single model in the US midsized (yes, they have an even bigger segment above these) crossover segment top-13 (out of 17) outsells the entire European segment combined. Still, at +41% in the first quarter of 2017, this is one of the fastest growing segments in Europe, although that’s all thanks to one newcomer. This newcomer also breaks the Asian domination of the segment to put an American model on top in Europe for the first time ever. The Ford Edge has stormed up the charts since its launch halfway through 2016, but was unable to claim the full year top spot. But in the first quarter, the Edge has taken a controlling lead with over 31% share of the segment and more than 1.000 units ahead of its nearest rival.

The Hyundai Santa Fe hold on to its second place with sales up 9%, while its sister model Kia Sorento loses 6% to drop from first in Q1 of 2016 to second in the full year 2016 ranking to third this quarter. At least the two South-Korean models combined still outsell the Edge and they’re still way ahead of the other players in the segment, the Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser. In 6th place the SsangYong Rexton gains 18% but remains a niche player. A new generation of the Rexton will be launched later this year.

Also check out the midsized SUV segment in the US, which takes 11% of the total US market, compared to just 0,4% of the European market.
