Sales of large SUVs are down 9% in the first half of 2022 as the segment continues to gain share in Europe, outperforming the overall market down 15%. They now make up 3.1% of the total European car market, from 2.9% last year. The share of luxury brands in this class slightly rebounds to 84.7%, from 82.4% in the first half of 2021. And the entire top-9 of the segment consists of luxury models. In the second quarter, the large SUV class was down 7% in an overall market down 24%
The BMW X5 has been the class leader for years and it continues to gain share with sales down just 3% year-to-date. Its nearest rivals Mercedes-Benz GLE and Volvo XC90 are down by 16% and 9% respectively. The Audi e-Tron rebounds to 4th place year-to-date, moving back ahead of its EV rival BMW iX as well as the Range Rover Sport which lost 46% of its deliveries in Q2 as it’s due for a redesign. The brand’s best seller in this class is now the Land Rover Defender, up 3%, even outselling the Porsche Cayenne. In contrast to the latter, its platform siblings Audi Q8 and Q7 are losing share, but not as much as their mainstream sibling Volkswagen Touareg, down 41% year-to-date (and -58% in Q2). That makes the Kia Sorento now the best selling mainstream large SUV, despite a 36% drop in deliveries. Its sibling Hyundai Santa Fe is down just 4% but is only in 16th place, behind the luxury SUV-coupes BMW X6 and Audi e-Tron Sportback. We see stable sales for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, while the Toyota Land Cruiser is up 28% to move past the Toyota Highlander as well as the Lexus RX. The new generation Range Rover is in showrooms but not yet fully available for customer deliveries, so it’s still down 10% in Q2 and 46% year-to-date. It still outsells the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS, though.
The Maserati Levante is up 12% in 25th place, staying ahead of the Chinese EVs Hongqi E-HS9 and BYD Tang, for now only available in Norway but soon spreading out to other markets. The same can be said of the Nio ES8 at #32. The Ford Explorer loses two thirds of its deliveries and barely manages to outsell the Lamborghini Urus and Bentley Bentayga. In the second quarter, the Rolls Royce Cullinan outsold the Aston Martin DBX, but not enough to move ahead year-to-date.
