US sales 2015 Q1-Q3 Large SUV segment

US SUV Large

The Large SUV segment continued shrinking in Q3, with sales down by 10% compared to the same period last year. While the low gas prices seem to have benefited most other SUV segments, these ladder-on-frame dinosaurs clearly have a hard time getting back into favor with customers, possibly due to increasing competition from much newer, and better, competition from the Large Premium SUV segment.

Highlights:

  • The only model which recorded a sales growth in Q3 was the Toyota Sequoia, albeit from a low base. It is now closing in on the Nissan Armada, and may yet relegate the large Nissan to the second-to-last spot before the year is over
  • The segment leaders, Chevy’s Tahoe and Suburban twins, continue losing sales at the same pace as the 3rd-placed Ford Expedition, despite being 8 years younger than the frequently-facelifted Ford
  • The GMC twins are losing sales at a slightly lower pace than its Chevy cousins
