US car sales analysis 2018 – Large SUV segment

Rising Ford Expedition sales lift the segment into the black, while the Nissan Armada loses steam

Sales in the US Large SUV segment rose by 4.6% to 358,118 in 2018, a return to growth after the small decline in sales the segment experienced in 2017. However, while the total number of cars sold in the segment was the highest it has been since 2008, it still was less than half of the record the segment set in 2001, when more than 750,000 cars found new homes. With the new Ford Expedition still in the growth phase there is a good chance the segment will continue to grow slowly in 2019, although it may not be until the GM quadruplets are revised that it will truly get a chance of cracking 400,000 sales once again.

Highlights:

  • After a slow start to the year the new Ford Expedition saw its sales rise by more than 50% in the second half of 2018, allowing it to advance one place in the standings, and squeeze in between the Tahoe and Suburban Chevy twins, which themselves did rather well to notch up growth of over 5%
  • In a reversal of fortunes, the new-for-2017 Nissan Armada saw its 30% growth in the first half of the year not just disappear, but go into full reversal in the second half of 2018 – it finished the year behind the GMC twins Yukon and Yukon XL
  • Nonetheless, the Nissan did well enough to once again outsell the Toyota models, the aging Sequoia and Land Cruiser, by a factor of 2-to-1
