US car sales analysis Q2 2019 – Large SUV segment

Segment sales rise quickly on the back of good Ford Expedition and GMC Yukon sales growth

Sales in the US Large SUV segment rose by 19.2% to 186,534 in the first half of 2019, a marked acceleration on the 4.6% sales growth the segment experienced in 2018. With the new Ford Expedition still in the growth phase, and the new Chevrolet and GMC models sure to debut before the end of the year, it looks like the segment’s immediate future remains bright, at least as long as oil prices don’t suddenly rise or the economy collapses.

Highlights:

  • Thanks to strong sales growth of almost 30% the new Ford Expedition was able to eat into the segment lead enjoyed by Chevv Tahoe, although GM’s lead in this segment remains formidable once you include the longer Chevy Suburban, or the GMC Yukon models (whose sales growth is misleading, driven by GM’s decision to no longer break out the Yukon XL from the shorter model’s sales figures)
  • (Much) further back, the Nissan Armada saw its sales remain pretty much as they were in the first half of 2018, although that still meant that the model did much better than the aging Toyota Sequoia
