Sales of commercial vans in the US are down 8% in the first quarter of 2020, outperforming the overall market which is down 13%. Considering 2019 was a record year for van sales in the United States, this is a very strong continuation for the segment. The Ford Transit manages a 16% gain in deliveries, improving its share of the segment to 36.6%, from 29% last year. When only including large vans, the Transit holds a 44% share. Its nearest rivals are two very old models, the Chevrolet Express, down 23%, and the Ford E-Series, down 6%. The E-Series is technically not even a van anymore, as since the launch of the Transit in 2015 the E-Series is only available as a cutaway chassis version (a van cab with a stripped chassis used for conversions). The RAM ProMaster is down 28% after a strong performance in 2019 and falls to fourth place. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has recentely been redesigned and improves its sales by 5%, while the twin model of the Chevy Express, GMC Savana, is the big loser among full-sized vans at -36%. It still manages to outsell the Nissan NV Van, down 17% on its record year.
In the compact commercial van part of the segment, which accounts for just 15.8% of total van sales in the US and is down 14% on the first quarter of 2019, Ford also dominates with 44.7% share for the Transit Connect. Altogether, Ford has a 54.2% share of the commecial van market in the United States with its three models. The Nissan NV200 improves its deliveries by 2% and holds on to second place ahead of the RAM ProMaster City, which is down 43% on 2019. The Mercedes-Benz Metris is down 11% and the NV200’s clone Chevrolet City Express is up 32% but remains a niche player with just 0.9% of the overall van segment and 5.1% of the small commercial van segment.
