The full sized pickup truck segment in the US slightly outperforms at -12% in the first three quarters of 2022, in an overall market down 13%. With just over 1,466 million deliveries, the class is set to shrink once again after hitting a 7-year low last year. However, it’s still the third-largest class in the United States, after compact crossovers and midsized crossovers. Its share improved 0.1 percentage points to 14.3% so far this year. In Q3, large pickup deliveries were stable in an overall market also stable.
The traditional class leader Ford F-Series started the year on a low note but stabilized its sales in the second and thirs quarters. Still, it’s down 13% so far this year. After starting 2022 at the #2 spot and dropping back to third place in Q2, the RAM Pickup narrowly beats the Chevrolet Silverado again in Q3. But the margin is too small to take back its place in the year-to-date ranking. The GMC Sierra completes the top-4 which are all down by either 3% or 5% in the third quarter and all down by between 9% and 16% so far this year. The top-4 also holds a 94% share of the class. The Toyota Tundra is trying to reduce that figure and is performing exceptionally this year at +43% in Q3 and +15% so far this year. In contrast, the Nissan Titan has failed in its mission. The second generation Titan couldn’t do what the first one also couldn’t, and now the brand is unsurprisingly pulling out of the North American commercial vehicle business altogether. GMC dealers delivered 411 Hummer EV Pickups in Q3 to more than double their 2022 tally, but it remains a niche player at a humble 0.1% share.
