US car sales analysis 2020 first half – Commercial Vans

Commercial van sales in the US are down 29% in the first half of 2020, falling behind the overall market after outperforming it in Q1. In the second quarter, 46% fewer commercial vans were sold than in Q2 of 2019, a worrying trend and an indicator of how bad the economy is struggling. For the first half of 2020, full-sized van sales are down 30% while small van sales are down 23%. The Ford Transit sees a 57% drop in deliveries in Q2, while its nearest rival Chevrolet Express is down 58% in the quarter and that model’s sibling GMC Savana is in even greater difficulty at -69%. For the first half, the Transit is down by a quarter and the Express by 42%. The RAM ProMaster stays in third place with sales down by just over a third, distancing the Ford E-Series. The only nameplate to improve so far this year is the redesigned Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, up 21% in the first half and up 35% in Q2 when it outsold the E-Series and ProMaster and even came within 300 sales of the #2 spot of the segment. The Savana is down 55% in the first half, while the Nissan NV van is down 31%, just as Nissan has announced it will unlikely continue with the model which had a record year in 2019 but remains a niche player.

In the compact commercial van part of the segment, which accounts for 19.1% of total van sales in the US (up from 17.7%) and is down 23% on the first half of 2019, Ford also dominates with 43.6% share for the Transit Connect. Altogether, Ford has a 49.5% share of the commecial van market in the United States with its three models. The Nissan NV200 sees its deliveries decline by 20% and holds on to second place ahead of the RAM ProMaster City, which is down 37% on 2019. The Mercedes-Benz Metris is down 6% which makes it the best performer among small vans, and the NV200’s clone Chevrolet City Express is up 23% but remains a small-time player with just 1.4% of the overall van segment and 7.3% of the small commercial van segment.
