US car sales analysis 2019 Q2 – Large Pickup segment

Stellar sales performance from the RAM Pickup sees it jump ahead of the Chevy Silverado

Sales in the US Large Pickup segment rose by 1.9% to 1,174,581 in the first half of 2019, all but matching the 2.1% growth rate the segment recorded in 2018. What’s more, all this happened while the segment is still awaiting the proper rollout of the all-new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, and while the new RAM Pickup is still ramping up production. All this means that the odds are that the segment will best the 2,450,000 or so cars that were sold in 2004 and 2005 either this year, or next.

Highlights:

  • Ford F-series easily retained the segment lead, and its sales were pretty much the same as they were last year
  • The new RAM Pickup was once again the undisputed standout performer in the segment, especially on the back of the almost-40% sales rise the model recorded in the second quarter, when model sales reached almost 70,000 in June; clearly, RAM’s decision to continue selling the old model alongside the new model was the right one
  • This amazing performance allowed the RAM to jump ahead of the outgoing Chevrolet Silverado in the standings – if this remains until the end of the year, this will have been the first time ever that the RAM/Dodge Pickup outsold the SIlverado
  • The about-to-be-replaced GMC Sierra and the aging Toyota Tundra both saw their sales fall slowly, which still made their performance much better than that of the second-generation Nissan Titan, which saw its sales decline by almost a quarter, a truly poor performance for a still-new model
