US car sales analysis 2018 Q2 – Minivan segment

Segment dips back into the red as slow Honda Odyssey sales buildup cannot outweigh decline in Pacifica sales

Sales in the US Minivan segment fell by 2.6% to 257,456 in the first half of 2018, a climbdown following a surprising 2.7% sales increase in the first quarter of the year. With the new Honda Odyssey slowly building up sales, the Chrysler Pacifica still fresh and the new Toyota Sienna around the corner, the segment may yet bounce back into the black in 2018.

Highlights:

  • The ancient Dodge Grand Caravan not only remained comfortably at the lead of the segment, but even managed to increase its sales by a further 10% in the second quarter of the year
  • After a good run of sales increases since it came to market, Chrysler Pacifica saw its first quarterly sales decline of 12% in Q2’18, suggesting the model does not quite have the muscle out dislodge its ancient cousin at the head of the segment, although it has been able to comfortably outsell all the other models in the segment

  • After just missing out on third spot in Q1’18, the new Honda Odyssey was able to comfortably outsell the about-to-be-replaced Toyota Sienna in the second quarter, thus assuming the final position on the podium
  • Kia Sedona continued to lose sales and now finds itself last, with an almost-irrelevant sales tally of just over 10,000 units in the first half of 2018, casting doubts on whether the model will be replaced once the full-size SUV Telluride goes on sale later this year
