US car sales analysis 2021 – Minivans

Minivan sales in the US are up 14% in 2021, beating the overall market which is up 3%, but 2021 is still the second lowest volume year for minivans ever. Minivans now accounts for 2.1% of the overall car market, up from 1.9% in 2020. In Q4, minivan sales were up 5% in an overall market down 21%.

And there’s big news at the top of the ranking, as the new generation Toyota Sienna, now only available as a hybrid, shockingly takes control of the minivan segment. It does so thanks to sales up 152% which allow it to claim 34.8% share of the class. One reason why the Sienna has been able to grab the top spot, is that Chrysler was forced to cut production of the Pacifica in Q2 and Q3. The former class leader is up just 5% for the year and sees its share decline to 31.7%. However, in the fourth quarter the Pacifica was back on top, outselling the Sienna by more than 14,000 units. Still, the latter finished the year 10,000 sales ahead of the Chrysler. The Honda Odyssey was in second place after the third quarter but dropped back to #3 for the year, with sales down 9%. The all-new Kia Carnival almost doubled the sales of the Sedona last year. The Carnival’s 8.1% share of the class matches the Sedona’s record of 2016, but that was at almost double the volume at 44,200 sales. More than a year after production of the Dodge Grand Caravan ended, only 81 units were delivered in Q4 of 2021.
