US car sales analysis Q2 2019 – Minivan segment

Segment resumes its double-digit sales decline as every model falls into the red

Sales in the US Minivan segment fell by 15.8% to 216,835 in the first half of 2019, rapidly accelerating the sales decline the segment has been experiencing in the past few years. With the new Toyota Sienna being the only new model on the (seemingly still-distant) horizon, and the Kia Sedona not long for this world now that the Telluride has arrived, it’s hard to see this trend reversing anytime soon.

Highlights:

  • Every single model in the segment experienced a sales decline, and all but one saw their sales fall by double digits
  • Worryingly for FCA, the archaic Dodge Grand Caravan not just continued to outsell the newer Chrysler Pacifica, its sales decline was actually less bad than for the latter, which may have contributed to the surprising step to bring back the Chrysler Voyager moniker back from the dead for a bottom-level Pacifica specification
  • The new Honda Odyssey saw its sales fall in only its second year on the market, meaning that the model is now roughly where the previous-generation model was in its final year on sale
  • Given its newer opposition Toyota Sienna did well to drop only 11% of its sales, certainly beating the performance of the newer Kia Sedona, which saw its sales decline by 40% in the second quarter of 2019, suggesting buyers are migrating to the new up-to-eight-seat Telluride
