US car sales analysis 2020-Q1 – Minivans

The minivan segment in the US declines by 21% in the first three months of 2020, which drops it significantly below the 100,000 sales for the quarter. It now accounts for 2.3% of the overall car market, down from 2.6% last year.

The Dodge Caravan declines faster than the segment and drops to 30.7% share. It stays barely ahead of its much more modern stablemate Chrysler Pacifica, the only nameplate in the minivan segment to improve its sales year-over-year. Thanks to its 5% gain, Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles now holds a 60.8% share of the minivan segment. The Caravan will end production in May 2020 and its place as a budget minivan will be filled by a decontented version of the Pacifica, called the Chrysler Voyager. Meanwhile, the Pacifica will be updated for the 2021 model year and should finish this year as America’s best selling minivan for the first time. Sales of the Honda Odyssey are down 23% and the Toyota Sienna is the biggest loser in the segment with a loss of 36%. The Kia Sedona is the second-best performer with just a 7% decline, just when the brand is getting ready to launch a new generation by the end of this year or early next year.
