Sales of small passenger vans, called Ludospace in France, are up 9% in 2015 to 213.689 units, after spending two years below 200.000 sales. The two segment leaders Volkswagen Caddy Life and Citroën Berlingo Multispace both lose share, the Caddy is down 3% as it was being renewed at the end of 2015 and the Berlingo is up by just one percent. In third place, up from fifth, we find the Dacia Dokker thanks to a 20% increase in volume. That puts the French-Romanian budget-MPV ahead of its established cousin Renault Kangoo and the Berlingo’s clone Peugeot Partner (called Ranch in the UK).

Ford_Tourneo_Courier-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeFord is almost solely responsible for the segment increase thanks to its two entries, the Tourneo Connect continues to benefit from the second generation, which is available in two wheelbases, while the all-new Tourneo Courier passes the Fiat Qubo to become the best seller of the smallest models. The Fiat Doblo shows an impressive 40% increase thanks to its facelift, moving ahead of the Nissan NV200 Evalia, which is helped by sales of its electric version e-NV200 Evalia.

Large passenger van segment

Passenger-van-segment-European-sales-2015-Volkswagen_T5-Fiat_Ducato-Mercedes_Benz_V_ClassThe large passenger van segment in Europe is up an amazing 24% in 2015, if we take out sales of the segment leader Volkswagen Transporter/Multivan. Unfortunately, our source has not yet supplied data of the new generation T6 Transporter, so the figures you find in the table below are for the outgoing T5 only, which was sold until August. Naturally Full-Year figures for the VW are down sharply, considering five months of data are missing. Even then, the T5 Transporter/Multivan has been so dominant that with only seven months of data it holds on to the segment top spot. Even in its last partial year, the T5 was up 10,7% through August and the new generation will only have added to that, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the two generations combined have shown a similar increase as the rest of the segment.

Renault_Trafic-passenger-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeThanks to its facelift, the Fiat Ducato holds on to its second place, but it is under threat from the Mercedes-Benz V-Class, which more than doubles its volume from its introduction year. The Renault Trafic and Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro duo have also been renewed last year and are both up with double digits, they’ll be joined by a Fiat version later this year, which will replace the PSA-built Scudo. The Mercedes-Benz Vito Tourer is down 28% because in 2014 its sales included the outgoing luxury version Viano, which has been replaced by the V-Class. This also explains why the segment has increased so sharply: the entire top-6 has been renewed or updated less than 2 years ago.

But even the existing models have done pretty well: the Ford Tourneo Custom continues to improve with sales up 26%, and it is followed by its larger cousin Transit Tourneo, which has been renewed last year. As a result, the Transit outsells the similarly-sized Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, which sees flat sales.
