The midsized passenger van segment in Europe is down by 41% in the first half of 2020 to 67,000 sales. The Volkswagen Transporter T6 and its luxury derivative Multivan are down 46% and lose share. They now hold 30% of the segment but stay ahead of the combination of the Mercedes-Benz V-Class and Vito Tourer, which total 18,600 sales, down 30%. The PSA-Toyota quadruplets are in third place with a combined 13,500 sales, down 36%. The latest addition Opel/Vauxhall Zafira Life is immediately the best seller of the four, ahead of the Toyota Proace and the Peugeot Traveller. The Renault Trafic and its clones Fiat Talento and Nissan NV300 are down 50% to 7,400 sales as the Trafic has only just been facelifted. The Ford Tourneo Custom is closing in with just under 7,000 sales, down 38% while the Hyundai H1 remains a niche player with just 352 sales so far this year.

Small Passenger Van segment

Sales of small passenger vans are down 37% and the Volkswagen Caddy is still the leader when looking at individual nameplates, improving its share to almost 24% thanks to sales down 24%. Its nearest three rivals all lose more than 34%, but the Peugeot Rifter and Citroën Berlingo twins still manage to be the best seller combined, with 36.5% share. Add to that their clone Opel/Vauxhall Combo Tour and the all-new Toyota Proace City Verso and PSA holds a 45.5% share of the segment, up from 39.5% in the same period last year. The Dacia Dokker is due for a replacement and its sales are down by 36%. The same goes for the Renault Kangoo, down 46% and its clone Mercedes-Benz Citan, down 49%. Mercedes is planning to split its next generation passenger van in two version, just like it does with the Vito and V-Class. We’ll see the Citan Combi for fleets and businesses and the T-Class as a luxury alternative for families.
