European sales 2016 first half midsized crossover segment

The midsized crossover segment in Europe has grown at double the speed of the overall market in the first half of 2016: +17% vs. +8,8%, but it was still outsold by the small crossover segment for the first time ever in Q2. Nonetheless, sales of midsized crossovers are expected to continue increasing, as new brands and models keep entering this highly competitive class. The increased competition takes away some share from the segment leader Nissan Qashqai, but so far no other model can come close to challenging its leadership. Its closest rival of last year, the Volkswagen Tiguan suffered from a model changeover and has dropped to 4th place, making room for the two South-Korean sister models to step onto the podium. Even the all-new Renault Kadjar outsold the Tiguan in Q2, but the VW is likely to strike back in the second half, when deliveries of the new generation gain traction. As a result of these new or updated models, the Ford Kuga loses two spots on last year to become a distant #6 despite growing 22%.

Even further down, the battle for 7th place is fierce as well, between the Toyota RAV4, the first model in the segment to be available as a hybrid (not counting the plug-in hybrid Outlander), the Skoda Yeti and the Nissan X-Trail. The latter makes it 3 Renault-Nissan models on the same platform in the top-9, with a share of 31,3% of the segment, compared to a 20,9% for Hyundai-Kia. Let’s see how Volkswagen’s MQB platform will do when all three models are fully available next year: the Tiguan, Seat Ateca and Skoda Kodiaq. Indicating that some kind of consolidation may be taking place in the segment, from the #10 downwards only one model adds volume and that’s by a margin of less than 200 units, while most of the others show double digit declines. The Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V and Mitsubishi Outlander are pretty stable, but the Mitsubishi ASX loses 25% in Q2, the Suzuki S-Cross is down 38% in the first half on competition from the Vitara and because a facelift is imminent.

Seat_Ateca-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeWe welcome no less than three all-new models to the segment this quarter, still with very shy numbers in their first few months: in 25th place the Seat Ateca, the Spanish sister of the Tiguan, aiming for a top-10 position next year. In 30th place with just 70 sales in its introduction month the Kia Niro, the crossover version of the Hyundai Ioniq hybrid and Kia’s second entry in this segment. 31st place, also introduced in June the MG GS, the UK-only model of the British-Chinese brand. The GS was supposed to help SAIC-MG start opening up other European markets, but those plans have unfortunately been frozen when the Brexit vote complicated matters.

Also check out the heavily competitive compact SUV segment in the US where the #1 and #4 are separated by just 10% of sales.

  1. I’m not so sure that VW can make a big increase.Because of a lot internal concurrence like Seat Skoda…!This internal concurrence diminish the striking force of VW group because for example Skoda can take a part of the sales of VW models on the german market.Unlike the 90’s now the germans have a lot of concurrence in all segments in every continent!

    1. I’m afraid I don’t agree. Take a look at segments C,D – there I don’t see cannibalisation between VW and Skoda or Seat. Same with Qashqai and X-Trail and Kadjar. Same with Captur, Duster and Juke.

I think that Skoda or Seat buyers are people who cannot afford VW, but a least they want to have a VW-like car 🙂

      1. I agree 100% with your last sentence. Price is determinant for newcomers. And VW is not offering a low price entry.

      2. Duster is a low cost model unlike the Captur!Juke can’t beat Renault on the european market.Nissan’s major target is on the USA market not in EU!And the most nissan’s models is directed to the US market not for the EU market and they aren’t well known on the EU market unlike on the US market!Duster is a low cost model while Skoda and Seat aren’t a low cost models of VW.Dacia is like Datsun but on the EU market mostly on the eastern european’s markets Dacia has a lot of success because they are cheap and a lot of peoples buy them for taxis and for small business and Skoda and Seat aren’t so much cheap.

      3. Guess it’s the other way around:

The Ateca and Kodiaq are safe havens for VWGroup buyers who absolutely DON’T want a VW logo.
        This I can image …. 😉

  2. @Toja
A lot of automakers gave up on C,D segments on Europe. Most coincidence to this article is Nissan with Almera/Primera which was replaced by Qashqai .They didn’t want to fight against Golf/Passat and their clones and tried to find new ways . Before in VANs ans SUVs which developed to present crossovers. But IMHO there is no other ways now (Hybrids maybe???), so the battle in Crossovers will be till death :P.

PS.VAG monster is going weaker. Wait for July data 🙂

    1. Personally I hate VAG 🙂 So I’m hoping you are right but I just still see trend “Whatever VAG produces is just perfect”.
Moto press is helping them a lot too. I’m afraid that they are only getting weaken because of lack of crossovers.

    2. That data show -13,9% in EU.
Globally, VW may thank the (non-diesel buying) Chinese folks.
Overall carsales China in July up +26%, VW a little less.

  3. I am form Poland . Here moto press is german ownership only . And the most popular is Auto Swiat , part of Axel Springer AG , in general clone of Auto Bild . I really havn’t seen in any part of other press so tendentious articles like in Auto Świat. A car of VAG group is always the best there. They can fool in rankings even.
After latest scandals in German auto industry : VAG with diesel emission and ADAC cheat in their contest is really easy to speak that they try to fool people in every possible way.

  4. Don’t forget also the new Peugeot 3008!I think that it will be a segment buster like a Peugeot 2008 in the small SUV segment!
