The midsized crossover segment in Europe is down 35% in the first half of 2020 which narrowly beats the overall market. As a result, midsized crossovers now make up 6.5% of the total European car market, up from 6.2% in the first half of 2019 and 5.6% in all of 2019.

Like the midsized car segment, this is the smallest class where luxury brands outsell their mainstream rivals, at 53.4% share of the midsized crossover class, up from 50.5% in the first half of 2019 but down from 58.9% in all of 2019 and 64.3% in 2018. Best selling mainstream model in the first half and overall best seller in Q2 is the Toyota RAV4, adding two percentage points of share compared to last year, thanks to sales down 22%. The Skoda Kodiaq is down by 23% while the Peugeot 5008 is dwon 31%. The Ford Kuga was in second place among mainstream models in Q2, moving into 8th place overall. Its 70% loss year-on-year reflects its very slow start of the year when the new generation wasn’t available yet. The Kuga will continue to storm the charts this year, helped by the PHEV version which already makes up more than a third of Kuga sales. The original Plug-in hybrid crossover Mitsubishi Outlander is down 34% and thus still beats the segment but the brand’s sudden but imminent withdrawal from Europe means the only way is down from here on. Ofcourse Nissan hopes to pick up some of Mitsubishi’s customers with the upcoming new X-Trail and all-electric Ariya. The X-Trail is down 4% on which was already a very slow year for the nameplate, barely staying ahead of the Honda CR-V but behind the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace and Seat Tarraco.

The luxury part of the segment is as mentioned above larger than the mainstream midsized crossover segment, and the Mercedes-Benz GLC holds on to the overall segment lead. At -24% it even improves its share to 12.1% of the segment thanks to its facelift. The Volvo XC60 stays close behind with sales down 18% and just 1,000 sales behind in Q2. However, that was only good enough for third place among luxury players, as the BMW X3 was just 200 sales behind the GLC in the second quarter. The Audi Q5 is down by a third this year, while the Land Rover Discovery Sport sold just a third of the volume it sold in Q1 and is down 42% for the year. The BMW X4 distances the Porsche Macan and Alfa Romeo Stelvio, which both move up three spots from Q1, leapfrogging the Range Rover Velar, Lexus NX and Jaguar F-Pace. The all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQC sold a handful of units more than the Jaguar I-Pace in Q2.
