Midsized crossovers and SUVs are one of the best performing classes in Europe in the first quarter of 2022, with deliveries up 16% in an overall market down 13%. As a result, their share of the European car market jumps 2.6 percentage points to 10.8%, the first time this segment reaches double digit share. Luxury models are steadily taking control of this class as well, beating the class at +20%, and they now hold almost half (48.1%) of sales.
After taking the top spot in 2021, the Ford Kuga stays on top so far this year, but at -8% it is losing share and the Tesla Model Y is closing in, with a gap of just 2,200 deliveries. That leaves the Toyota RAV4 in third place with sales down 7%, while the Mercedes-Benz GLC moves back ahead of the Volvo XC60 which is down 22%. the Skoda Kodiaq is losing ground at #6 but stays well ahead of the BMW X3 (-31%) and Peugeot 5008 (-25%) which perform even worse. The Volkswagen ID.4 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 make it three EV-only nameplates in the top-10, with the Skoda Enyaq close behind, followed by the Kia EV6 at #13, while the Audi Q4 and Ford Mustang Mach-E make it 7 EVs in the top-15. The Q4 already outsells the Audi Q5 which is down 36% and now under threat from the Porsche Macan (+31%), although the Q5 would still be up year-on-year if we combine sales of the Q5 Sportback at #20. The Mercedes-Benz GLB loses over half of its sales at #19, a result only partially offset by the arrival of the EQB at #29.
The BMW iX3 already outsells the Mercedes-Benz EQC, while the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Lexus NX are impressively stable at +1% each, especially considering the NX is in the middle of a model changeover. Helped by the PHEV version, sales of the Jeep Wrangler more than double on last year, helping it outsell a quadruplet of Jaguar-Land Rover models. We welcome the MG Marvel R to the ranking at #37, immediately becoming the best selling Chinese model in the class, ahead of the Aiways U5 at #40, the Maxus Euniq 6 at #45 and the Skywell ET5 at #46. We also welcome the Skoda Enyaq Coupe at #47.
