Small crossover and SUV sales in Europe outperform the overall market again in the first quarter of 2021, with segment sales up 13% in a stable market, and they leapfrogged compact cars to become Europe’s #2 segment. And with over 541,000 sales, the small crossover class adds nearly two percentage points of market share to 17.7%. The top-5 players all outperform the segment and now hold a combined 40.8% of the class, up from 33.5% in Q1 last year.
There’s a change of guard at the top of the charts, with the Peugeot 2008 storming to the top spot with sales more than doubling on the same period last year. The Volkswagen T-Roc always starts the year strong, it was the class leader in both Q1 of 2020 and Q1 of 2019, but never was able to hold on to that top spot. In Q1 of 2021 the T-Roc is up 24% but down to second place, the same position it held in the full-year 2020 ranking. The class leader of the last seven years Renault Captur is up 30% on last year, but still drops to third place for now. The Ford Puma also more than doubles up on last year and jumps to fourth place, ahead of the Dacia Duster, up 25%. The Volkswagen T-Cross and Opel/Vauxhall Crossland are down by single digits but manage to move past the Hyundai Kona, down 11%. The Skoda Kamiq leapfrogs its sister model Seat Arona and the Citroën C3 Aircross to enter the top-10 thanks to sales up 24%. The Kia Niro also gains 26% and is chased by the Jeep Renegade, up 48%. The Nissan Juke and Fiat 500X slightly gain share, while the Suzuki Vitara an S-Cross are up 40% and 36% respectively, but that’s because in Q1 of 2020 they were down 50% on Q1 of 2019. The Kia Stonic and Xceed as well as the Ford EcoSport are among the biggest losers of the class.
The all-new generation Opel/Vauxhall Mokka lands at #23, just ahead of the MG ZS and will surely move further up the ranking as availability improves. The Mazda CX-3 is back after deliveries stopped in the beginning of last year, awaiting more efficient engines, while the Mitsubishi ASX loses almost two thirds of last year’s sales. The Honda HR-V doesn’t do much better at -58%.
Luxury models lose share, down to 6.1% from 7.1% in Q1 of last year, although it’s stable on the full-year 2020 figure. The Audi Q2 is down 14% and is just 2 sales ahead of the Mini Countryman, up 27%. They’re in 16th and 17th place overall, while the DS3 Crossback is down 32% into overall 25th place.
