Small crossover and SUV sales in Europe outperform the overall market in the first half of 2021, with segment sales up 40% in a market up 26%, improving their share of the European car market from 16.3% in the first half of 2020 to 18.1% now. With over 1.17 million sales, small crossovers become Europe’s #2 segment ahead of compact cars. When compared to the first six months of 2019, small crossovers are down just 7%, in an overall market down 22%, making it one of the best performing segments compared to 2019.
The entire top-20 improve by double digits, with the Ford Puma (#4, +130%) and Peugeot 2008 (#1, +97%) the best performers. In the second quarter, the Volkswagen T-Roc was the best seller in the class, outselling the 2008 by 2,400 units, but the little French crossover stays ahead year-to-date. The Renault Captur stays in third place with sales up 32% while its sibling Dacia Duster holds on to fifth place at +28%. The Duster was outsold in Q2 by the Volkswagen T-Cross, which is now up 34% year-on-year but stays in sixth place. The Hyundai Kona and Seat Arona move ahead of the Opel/Vauxhall Crossland, while the Skoda Kamiq is knocked down to 10th place by sibling model Arona. The Kia Niro leapfrogs the Citroën C3 Aircross for 11th place. The Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X siblings outperform the segment thanks to minor updates, and the Italian crossover passes the Nissan Juke, which was also outsold in Q2 by the Suzuki Vitara, Kia Stonic and Opel/Vauxhall Mokka. The Mokka enters the segment top-20 thanks to the new generation and its EV version. The MG ZS more than doubles up on last year now that it’s become available in a growing number of European markets.
The Kia Xceed at #21 is one of the nameplates selling less this year than it did in the same period last year, at -1%. Most other models losing sales are the ones being replaced or killed. We welcome the Hyundai Bayon, a smaller model below the Kona, with its first 2,268 deliveries and the DR EVO 4 with its first 519 deliveries in its home market Italy.
Luxury models lose share, down to 5.9% from 6.4% in the first half of last year. The Audi Q2 is up 30% in an overall 15th place and distances the Mini Countryman in the second quarter but compared to last year, the Countryman still performs best among luxury models at +44%. The DS3 Crossback is down 6% and one of the worst performing nameplates in the overall top-25.
