Sales of large MPVs in Europe continue to collapse in the first half of 2020. At just 23,500 deliveries in the first six months of the year, sales are down 55% on last year as the share of the large MPV segment falls from 0.6% in 2019 to 0.5% so far in 2020.
Only one nameplate in this segment loses less than half of its sales, and only by the slightest of margins at -49%. That allows the Seat Alhambra to keep its lead of the segment and increase its share by almost four percentage points to 30.9%. And the Alhambra was still the best selling large MPV in Europe, even though production of the model ended this quarter. The Tarraco crossover has taken over its position as the 7-seater in Seat’s line-up. Volkswagen will continue to build the Alhambra’s clone Volkswagen Sharan for now, but it’s unlikely there will be an MPV replacement after it too reaches the end of its life cycle. The Sharan holds on to its third place for now, with sales down 56%. It was just 30 sales off the #2 spot in Q2 and may benefit from the demise of the Alhambra by picking up additional sales from buyers that would have opted for the Spanish MPV. VW Group holds 55.1% share of the class in the first half of 2020, up from 51.6% in the same period of 2019.
Ford’s two entrants in this class both either match or outperform the segment, with the S-Max down 51% in 2nd place and the Galaxy down 55% in 4th place. The Renault Espace recovers slightly from a horrendous first quarter, but its 1.050 deliveries in Q2 are still down 68% for a first half figure down 76% on last year.
