Sales of midsized MPVs in Europe accelerate their downward spiral with a 42% decline in the first quarter of 2020, selling just over 74,000 units for a share of 2.4% of the European car market, down from 3.1% in 2019 and 3.9% in 2018.
And in this segment too the luxury brands continue to outperform the segment, growing their share from 29.1% in Q1 of 2019 to 37.1% now, while also claiming the title of best seller with the Mercedes-Benz B-Class. The B-Class is down just 8% and thus gains 6.7 percentage points of share to move past the previous leaders Volkswagen Touran (-39%) and Renault Scenic/Grand Scenic (-51%). The BMW Active and Gran Tourer is down 38% and the Citroën C4 Grand Picasso is down 39% now that the two-row version has been discontinued. The Volkswagen Sportsvan loses 41% of its sales but makes sure VW is still the best selling brand in the segment, while the electric BMW i3 beats the segment average with sales down 36%. So does the Dacia Lodgy at -29% but the best performer of the class and the only nameplate to sell more in Q1 of 2020 than in the same period last year is the Toyota Prius+. The hybrid taxi favorite in many cities across Europe manages to grow its sales by 31%, but it’s still the slowest seller of the segments, as the Ford C-Max has been discontinued.
