Sales of midsized MPVs in Europe are crashing down with a 54% decline in the first half of 2020, selling just under 124,000 units for a share of 2.4% of the European car market, down from 3.3% in the first half of 2019 and 3.9% in 2018.
And in this segment too the luxury brands continue to outperform the segment, growing their share from 30% in the first half of 2019 to 34.9% now. If the Mercedes-Benz B-Class claimed the class lead in Q1, the Volkswagen Touran struck back in Q2 and reclaims the YTD top spot. The Renault Scenic also outsold the B-Class in Q2 but doesn’t manage to move back into the #2 place for the first half of the year. The Scenic is the biggest loser in the segment with sales down 60% on last year, when it topped the charts. The BMW 2-Series Tourer holds on to its #4 spot despite being outsold by the Volkswagen Golf Sportsvan in Q2, but the latter does manage to leapfrog the Citroën C4 Grand Picasso. The Dacia Lodgy moves past the BMW i3 and the Toyota Prius+ is the best performer of the class with sales down just 4% while all others lose at least tenfold that percentage. And despite more than doubling its share of the class to 4.4%, it stillcarries the red lanternat #9.
