Sales of midsized MPVs in Europe tumbled down 46% in 2020, selling just under 263,000 units for a share of 2.2% of the European car market, down from 3.1% in 2019. Only a single nameplate manages to beat the market, with all others losing 26% of their sales or more.
And in this segment too the luxury brands continue to outperform the segment, growing their share from 33% in 2019 to 37.5% now. Still, the Volkswagen Touran manages to return to the top of the ranking, despite being outsold by the Mercedes-Benz B-Class in Q1 and Q3. The Touran adds more than 2.5 percentage points of market share thanks to sales down “just” 37%. The Renault Scenic drops from first to third with sales down by more than half. The BMW 2-Series Active and Gran Tourer as well as the Citroën C4 Spacetourer move along with the segment average at -45% and -46% respectively. The Volkswagen Sportvan is down by 43%, outperforming the class, but its Q4 sales slowed to a trickle as the model nears the end of its life cycle. Best performers in the class are the Toyota Prius+ and BMW i3, followed by the Dacia Lodgy, although those are also still the three slowest sellers of the class.
