The midsized MPV segment continues to lose ground in the first half of 2022 with sales down 36% to just under 116,000 deliveries. In the second quarter, midsized MPV sales were down 43%. As the traditional MPV segment is down to just 6 players and the van-based models are replacing some of them, we’ve decided to combine these two segments from now on. Still, the traditional MPVs make up 55.8% of the combined class with sales down 29% so far this year, while the van-based models are down 42%. This is also a result of the decision by Stellantis to discontinue sales of their internal combustion engine passenger vans in favor of their EV versions. Among the traditional MPVs, the luxury brands are taking firmer control, improving their share by 11 percentage points to 52.4% of MPV deliveries.

The Volkswagen Caddy is the best seller of the newly combined class, despite sales down 20%. It distances its sibling Volkswagen Touran which loses more than half of its sales and drops to an overall 4th place behind the Mercedes-Benz B-Class (down 23%) and BMW i3 (stable on last year). The Renault Scenic loses over a third of its deliveries, while the Citroën C4 Spacetourer is down 18% as both nameplates outperform the class. Best performing nameplate among traditional MPVs is the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer at +41% thanks to the new generation. Its 7-seater version 2-Series Gran Tourer loses half of its sales at #12 as its new generation is still due. The Dacia Lodgy is down by a third (and by half in Q2), while the Toyota Proace City Verso is about to become the best seller among the Stellantis-Toyota vans, as Toyota still sells petrol and diesel versions of its van, as opposed to the Stellantis brands. Of those, the Peugeot Rifter is down 65%, the Citroën Berlingo is down 76% and the Opel/Vauxhall Combo is down 65%.

In contrast, the redesigned Renault Kangoo storms into the top-8 with sales more than doubling on the previous generation’s sales last year. Its siblings Nissan Townstar (#16) and Mercedes-Benz Citan (#17) are moving up the ranking as well but still at lower volumes. Mercedes has now also launched a more luxurious version of the Citan with the T-Class, in similar vain as the Vito/V-Class, and there will be an all-electric EQT as well. In all this new product blitz, the Ford Tourneo Connect is staying relatively strong at -4% (and +8% in Q2) in 12th place. The Fiat Doblo is down to just 103 deliveries as the next generation is set to be pulled into the Stellantis-Toyota fold as an EV-only model.
