Sales of midsized cars fall behind the overall market in the first half of 2022, with a 24% decline in deliveries compared to a 15% drop for the entire market. As a result, midsized cars now make up 5.6% of the total volume, down from 6.2% in the first half of 2021. After beating the market in the first quarter with a 7% decline, midsized cars see a 34% drop in deliveries in Q2. Luxury models improve their share of the class by 1.5 percentage points to 67%.

If the Tesla Model 3 topped the ranking in 2021 and the first quarter of 2022, production issues from the Shanghai Gigafactory has reduced supply of the EV, dropping it to 7th place in Q2 with a 79% drop in deliveries. As a result, the Model 3 drops to 2nd place year-to-date with 40% fewer deliveries. That allows the BMW 3-Series to grab the lead of the class, despite selling a third fewer than last year. In the second quarter, the Volkswagen Passat was the best seller ahead of the 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. As a result, the former class leader Passat passes the Audi A4 for third place year-to-date. In Q2, the A4 was down 43% and was outsold by the Skoda Superb as well. The BMW 4-Series is the best performing nameplate of the class at +34% and would be in overall 5th place ahead of the A4 if we include sales of its EV version BMW i4. By itself, the i4 is in 12th place year-to-date, and it was even in the segment top-10 in Q2. The Volvo S60/V60 is quickly losing ground with sales cut in half on last year. In the second quarter, the Audi A5 was down 44%, bringing it down 24% for the year. That allows the Volkswagen Arteon to close the gap in 10th place. Mainstream models struggling are the Peugeot 508 (-43%), Opel/Vauxhall Insignia (-43%), Ford Mondeo (-33%), Toyota Camry (-36%), Renault Talisman (-42%) and Mazda6 (-33%). In contrast, the Subaru Legacy/Outback is down just 2%, while the Citroën C5 X is up to 16th place.
