Sales of large MPVs outperform the market in Europe  in the first half of 2022 at -6%, now that we’ve reshuffled our segmentation to include van-based MPVs. As a result, the van-based models make up 76.9% of the segment thanks to sales down 4%, while traditional MPVs are down 11%.

The Volkswagen Transporter, including the Caravelle and California versions, leads the combined class as it did with the van-segment, with sales down 6% on last year to take 22.5% share. It’s followed at a distance by its sibling Volkswagen Multivan, in its new generation based on the MQB platform and more a traditional MPV than its van-based predecessor. With sales up 32% on the previous version, it takes 12.5% share of the class and is the best selling traditional MPV at a large distance. It’s only 7 deliveries ahead of the Mercedes-Benz V-Class, and if we add those of the latter’s all-electric version EQV and the less luxurious version Vito Tourer, Mercedes-Benz is in a close 2nd place with 20.4% share. The Ford Tourneo Custom is not far behind either with sales down 13%. Thanks to an update, the Renault Trafic is up 52% to 7th place. Like in the smaller class, Toyota outperforms its Stellantis siblings as the Japanese brand continues to offer petrol and diesel versions of its Proace Verso while Stellantis has shifted to an EV-only strategy for its passenger vans. The Proace is up 51% to #6, while the Opel/Vauxhall Zafira Life is stable at #8, the Citroën Spacetourer is down 26% to #10, the Peugeot Traveller is down 46% to #13 and newcomer Fiat Ulysse lands at #20. The second best selling traditional MPV is the Ford S-Max at #9 (-28%), followed by the Seat Alhambra at #11 (-10%), the Ford Galaxy at #12 (-12%), Volkswagen Sharan at #14 (-63%) and Renault Espace at #16 (-57%).

The Hyundai Staria and Maxus Euniq 5 are starting to gain traction while the Volkswagen ID. Buzz lands with its first 26 deliveries.
