In the first half of 2022, 16% fewer exotic cars were delivered to customers in Europe, narrowly trailing the overall market which is down 15%. The compact sports car segment also trails the overall market with a 19% decline, while the large sports car segment does much better with a 14% gain in deliveries.For the last 2 years, Ferrari has held 3 of the top-4 spots in the Exotic car segment, and in 2021 it even had the overall best seller with the F8. In the first half of 2022, the Italian brand holds only one podium place as the Bentley Continental GT reclaims the top position with a 66% jump in deliveries. That knocks the Ferrari F8 into second place as it loses almost half of its sales of last year. In the second quarter, deliveries of the F8 drop by 61%. In contrast, the Lamborghini Huracan is up 48% so far this year, outselling the Ferrari SF90, up 21%. The top-5 is completed by the Ferrari 812, down 28%. The Aston Martin DB11 rebounds with a 14% gain, but it was outsold in the second quarter by the Lamborghini Aventador which is up 2% year-to-date and completes the top-7. All models outside the top-7 are down by double digits or new arrivals. The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera (-24%) and McLaren 700 Series (-35%) are the least in trouble, but the Ferrari Monza and McLaren 500/600 Series are both down 81% and the Ford GT and McLaren GT are down by over 60% as well. Newcomers Lamborghini Countach, McLaren Artura and Aston Martin Valkyrie are still niche players.

Large Sports car segment
The large sports car segment is one of the very few segments to improve in the first half of 2022 with a 14% increase in deliveries. The Porsche 911 consolidates its absolute dominance with sales up an impressive 18% to improve its share of the class to 65.9%. Its closes challenger Mercedes-AMG GT is up 4% after seeing its deliveries drop by 9% in Q2 as the roadster version is about to be renamed the Mercedes-AMG SL, leaving just the Coupe. That knocks the Jaguar F-Type into third place with sales down 23%. The Ferrari Roma is up 12% and distances the Aston Martin Vantage which cooled down significantly in the second quarter, down 21%. The Vantage is now up 10% year-to-date. The Corvette, thanks to the new rear-engined version, is up almost sevenfold and outsells the Mercedes-Benz SL and Ferrari Portofino. The SL was the #5 seller in the second quarter thanks to the new generation and the Portofino is up almost threefold. Both have leapfrogged the Audi R8 (-27%) and Lexus LC (-38%). The Maserati MC20 stays ahead of the Ferrari 296 GTB as both are still in their introductory period.

Compact Sports car segment
Compact sports cars have underperformed in recent years, and they’re underperforming the overall market. The BMW Z4 continues its class leadership, despite losing 16% of its sales. The Mazda MX-5 is down 42% in the second quarter and 29% year-to-date. At least it manages to stay ahead of the Audi TT, which is down 9% on last year, and the Porsche 718 which is down 17%. Best performer in the top-10 is the Alpine A110 which is undergoing a revival at +76% on last year to leapfrog the Ford Mustang (-30%). The latter’s rival Dodge Challenger is down 28% but sells less than a tenth of the Mustang in Europe. Worst performers in the top-10 are the Lotus Elise (-43%), Toyota Supra (-41%) and Lotus Exige (-34%). Production of the Lotuses has ended already as they’re being replaced by the Emira. Thanks to the new generation, the Toyota GR86 almost triples the sales of the GT86 last year, but remains a small time player even in this class.
