Data & Charts for Total Tesla Brand Sales in Europe

Tesla Sales Data & Trends for the European Automotive Market

Tesla started European sales of its Model S sedan in 2013, when it opened a factory in The Netherlands, to assemble the American-made Model S for the European market. Before 2013, the brand had sold the Roadster in low volumes in Europe. The Model S, Model X and since 2019 the Model 3 have taken the all-electric brand to new heights, selling over 100.000 cars in Europe, with the Model 3 as the best selling EV in the continent, ahead of the much cheaper Renault Zoe and Nissan Leaf.

The success of the fully electric Teslas, are still relatively dependent on government incentives on EV’s. With Norway and The Netherlands leading in stimulating green transportation, it makes sense that Tesla sales in Europe took off first in these two countries. In the first years of sales, these two countries have taken over 80% of Model S sales and while the success of the American brand has spread across the continent, the Scandinavian and Dutch markets still lead the charts in absolute figures.

This is a result of generous monetary and non-monetary incentives in Norway, where all-electric cars are exempt from all non-recurring vehicle fees, including purchase taxes, which are extremely high for ordinary cars, and 25% VAT on purchase, together making an electric car purchase price competitive with that of a similarly sized conventional car. Electric vehicles are also exempt from the annual road tax, all public parking fees, and toll payments, as well as being able to use bus lanes. The Model 3 became Norway’s best selling nameplate overall in 2019 with Tesla as the #2 best selling brand behind VW, while the Model 3 also topped the Dutch charts thanks to subsidies on EV company cars, and Tesla was the #3 best selling brand overall behind VW and Opel.

  1. I do accept as true with all the concepts you’ve introduced in your
post. They’re very convincing and will definitely work.
Still, the posts are too short for novices. Could you please lengthen them a
bit from next time? Thanks for the post.

  2. i would have lined to read the whole article, but your site has some serious problems. a Google ad runs along the bottom part of the screen, at the same time a box taking up about 1/4 of the screen (on my iPad0 wanted me to accept your use of cookies. Except, the Google Ad covers the “Got It!” yellow button, so I could not press it. So the black box, and the Google ad, plus your large banner and menu at the top left so little screen space left over, reading the content was almost impossible to look at. Event turning the screen to portirate did not help.

Also note that your site is in violation of GDPR rules on privacy, not allowing me to opt out of your tracking. Just telling me with no option to say no is a violation of terms of the GDRP. I am reading this in France, so you can be sure they know abou this now.

  3. In the US sales began with the early adopters like myself. I know own 2 Model 3’s. I convinced 4 friends to buy a Tesla after giving them test drives or lending them my car for the weekend … which I would do for any perspective first time EV buyer. The real growth in sales comes after this first wave has been out in the market for 1 year. The car is amazing to own and drive because: 1) It’s a connected car (software updates are mind blowing); 2) Its the lowest cost car on the market if you do the math on the ROI (my old Honda cost me twice what I paid for it over time with gas, oil changes and maintenance) 3) The drive quality is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before … its exhilarating. Never criticize a Tesla until you have driven one.

    1. Few times I`ve been driver of tesla. Miserable car to my opinion. The worst thing that It gives no feeling of car. All that plastics, electronics – everything is so unnatural and synthetic. After Tesla I fell like poisoned and had a great wish of cure on dad`s Dodge Ram 90` (360cu). Now that`s REAL CAR and POWER!!! That feeling that Tesla gave me is close to wishing of hands wash after you put them in mud.

  4. Good site but a bit disappointed that there is no updated data since January

(And hey to display car-sales numbers with decimals (xxx.00) looks pretty stupid. How does a .25 car looks like 😉
