Seat Sales Data & Trends for the European Automotive Market

Seat sales in Europe bounced back up in 2013 and the following years after fluctuating in a downward trend from 2007 to 2012. The Spanish brand almost hit the 400.000 annual sales mark again in 2017, a figure last hit in 2004.

Seat’s best selling car in Europe is the Leon compact car since 2014, helped by the new generation and thanks to the addition of the nameplate’s first-ever station wagon version. The Ibiza subcompact was renewed in 2017 but has yet been unable to capitalize on that as it’s still a long way from its 2009 peak. The Mii minicar, a rebadged Volkswagen Up!, lags in sales far behind its German sibling, but also its Czech clone Skoda Citigo. It is the slowest selling model of the triplets and unlikely to be replaced by a second generation.

Similarly, the Toledo compact sedan is a clone of the Skoda Rapid but sales of the Czech version, which includes a hatchback version the Toledo doesn’t have, have been a multiple of those of its Spanish twin, which may give an indication of Seat’s brand value, and leaves you wondering what VW wants with the brand. At least in the large MPV segment Seat is right up there with VW, as the Alhambra MPV sells at similar figures as its twin Volkswagen Sharan, and has surprisingly been growing in a shrinking segment despite its advanced age.

In 2017 the VW Group started playing catch up in the fast-growing crossover and SUV segments, and Seat benefits with the introduction of its first-ever crossovers. The Spanish brand launched the Ateca compact crossover in 2017, followed by the Arona small crossover and the Tarraco midsized crossover  in 2018.
