BYD Auto, short for Build Your Dreams, was established in 2003 and markets the BYD brand in China, specializes in electric vehicles and has a manufacturing Joint Venture with Daimler to produce and market the Denza EV brand.

  1. I was recently doing some due diligence on BYD and looking at their 2017 Annual Report which is available here:

    I wanted to know how many cars BYD sold in 2017. My understanding (could be wrong) is that they sold 355,000 cars in 2017, which is a bit less than the 403,496 reported in this article. See pages of 11-12 of the BYD Annual Report where they mention 110,000 NEVs sold (EVs+PHEVs) and 245,000 conventional cars sold ( referred to in the report as “fuel vehicles”).

    Is there another source for the 403,496 number? The 2017 BYD Annual report is from the company itself, and so it would seem pretty authoritative.

    1. Hi John,

      it’s an interesting observation you’ve made. The 403.496 figure comes from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, to whom BYD reports their wholesale deliveries on a monthly basis, which we then add up to make an annual figure. This is generally accepted as the most reliable source of automotive sales data for China, bar the manufacturers themselves.
      The difference between the two numbers is too large to be explained as the difference between wholesale and retail sales, so I’m afraid I don’t have any other explanation than incorrect (or double) reporting to the CAAM.
