US car sales analysis 2020 – Upper Class

The upper class sedan segment in the US is down 26% in 2020, compared to a loss of 14% for the overall market. It’s the lowest annual volume in this millennium and long before The segment now makes up 0.2% of the US passenger car market, down from 0.3% in 2019. The traditional leader Mercedes-Benz S-Class keeps its spot on top of the rankings but dips slightly below 24% share of the segment. With is 31% loss in sales (-48% in Q4), the S-Class has its worst year in decades, but a new generation is on the way and should help the nameplate rebound in 2021. The BMW 7-Series even outsold the S-Class in the fourth quarter thanks to sales up 11%, but it’s still down 27% for the year. The all-electric Porsche Taycan leaps ahead of its stablemate Porsche Panamera to jump onto the segment podium, with the Lexus LS also outselling the Panamera in Q4. The Cadillac CT6, last year’s third place finisher, is down to #6 as it has been taken out of production. The Audi A8 stays ahead of the Genesis G90, while the Kia K900 stays in last place with just over 300 deliveries. The Jaguar XJ is due to be replaced by an all-electric version. Mercedes-Benz and BMW are also planning EV versions of their upper class sedans, named EQS and i7, respectively.
