Segment experiences second year of double-digit sales decline as Camry and Accord fail to reignite sales

Sales in the US Mid-sized segment fell by 13.7% to 1,697,498 in 2018, making it the second year in a row that sales in the segment have declined by more than 10%. With sales down by a third since their peak in 2015, the Mid-sized segment is another piece of evidence just how quick the shift toward crossovers has been over the past few years. What’s more, with new models such as Toyota Camry and Honda Accord failing to breathe life into the declining segment, Ford announcing that it won’t replace the Fusion, and Volkswagen doing just the bare minimum to update the Passat for a new model cycle, signs are that the segment is set for a further period of decline.

Highlights:
- Sales fell for every single model in the Top 10
- There was only one established model in the whole segment that recorded positive sales growth in 2018 – the new Buick Regal saw its sales rise by a modest 11%, albeit from a very low base
- Impressively, the combined sales of the different alternative fuel versions of the Honda Clarity (hybrid, battery and fuel cell, combined) did well enough to get within two/thirds of the sales of the established Mazda6
- Subaru Outback, Kia Optima and Mazda6 were the only models in the whole segment whose sales fell by single digits – the decline was in the double digits for everyone else
- The new Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, touted as the saviors of the segment, saw their sales fall by around 10% compared to 2017, making these the first generations of both models which were unable to lift sales!
- Sales fell most for models that are in the process of being replaced (VW Passat, down 32%, and Nissan Altima, down 18%) and those that are getting long in the tooth (Ford Fusion, down 17%, and Chevrolet Malibu, down 21% despite a recent facelift)
- The conservative Hyundai Sonata started off the year very badly, seeing its sales fall by almost a quarter, but the mid-year facelift helped matters somewhat, allowing the model to post modest sales gains in the fourth quarter of the year
